Sharjah 24 – AFP: Southern California experienced torrential rains on Wednesday, triggering flash floods and debris flows, particularly in fire-scarred areas. Authorities declared a state of emergency in several counties, including Los Angeles, as further downpours were forecast. The storm, driven by the “Pineapple Express,” could deliver months’ worth of rain in just a few days.

Storm warnings and risks

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned of a "broad plume of moisture" producing heavy rainfall and a "moderate risk" of excessive precipitation. Flash floods, river flooding, and debris flows in recently burned areas were possible. Rain was expected to continue through Friday.

Rescue operations underway

At least three storm-related deaths were reported, including a San Diego man killed by a falling tree. Emergency teams in San Bernardino County and Los Angeles rescued residents stranded in homes and vehicles, urging people to avoid waterways due to fast-moving floodwaters.

Fire-affected areas at higher risk

Fire-scarred zones like Pacific Palisades and Malibu remain particularly vulnerable, with reduced vegetation increasing flood risks. Northern California also faced flash flood alerts, and the Sierra Nevada Mountains could see heavy snowfall, raising concerns for travel and safety during the holidays.
