Sharjah24 - AFP: A powerful landslip swept through a campsite in rain-soaked northern New Zealand on Thursday, leaving several people missing beneath heavy mud and debris. The incident occurred at the base of the extinct volcano Mount Maunganui, where tonnes of earth crashed into the area.

Facilities buried by mud

Images circulating in local media showed large mounds of earth crushing a shower block and damaging multiple camper vans. The campsite, located on the North Island, had been hit by intense overnight rainfall.

Voices heard from beneath rubble

Witnesses and emergency officials said voices were briefly heard calling for help from under the debris. Assistant Police Commissioner Tim Anderson confirmed that rescue teams were operating in hazardous conditions, noting that the number of missing was in “single figures,” without giving an exact count.

Eyewitness describes chaos

Canadian tourist Dion Siluch said the ground began shaking while he was at nearby hot pools. He later realised that a landslide had pushed debris, including a caravan, into the area.

Rescue efforts halted due to risk

Emergency crews and bystanders initially attempted to dig into the rubble, hearing screams for help. However, rescuers were forced to evacuate the site due to ongoing earth movement, and the voices later fell silent.

Investigation and emergency response ongoing

Authorities continue to monitor the situation while assessing risks and coordinating further response efforts.
