Sharjah 24 – AFP: Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos has declared a state of national energy emergency, citing risks to fuel supply and energy stability caused by the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Measures to secure energy supply

The order allows the Department of Energy to make advance payments to secure fuel contracts and take action against hoarding and profiteering. It also enables coordinated government measures to address potential disruptions to global and domestic energy supplies.

Support for transport and consumers

Authorities can direct fuel subsidies for public transport, reduce or suspend tolls and aviation fees, and fast-track aid to individuals affected by rising energy costs.

Increased reliance on coal

With soaring LNG prices, the Philippines plans to temporarily increase coal-fired power generation, which already accounts for about 60% of the country’s electricity. Officials are also considering boosting coal imports from Indonesia if needed.

Long-term energy outlook

The country, heavily reliant on imported fuel, is exploring alternatives, including a recent natural gas discovery near the Malampaya field, which could help extend its energy supply in the future.
