Sharjah 24 – AFP: Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz announced on Monday that Israeli forces carried out a “powerful strike” on Iran’s largest petrochemical complex in Asaluyeh, which processes roughly half of the country’s petrochemical output.

Targeting the South Pars gas field

The complex serves the South Pars natural gas field, the world’s largest, shared with Qatar, and had been targeted in previous strikes last month. Katz described the attacks as a “severe economic blow,” with the two main facilities now reportedly out of operation, representing about 85% of Iran’s petrochemical exports.

Iranian response and damage assessment

Iran’s National Petrochemical Company said a fire at the Pars site was contained and no injuries were reported. Authorities later confirmed a separate strike at a petrochemical complex in Marvdasht, with the fire also under control.

Context of ongoing conflict

The strikes come amid ongoing conflict, with Israel targeting industrial and energy infrastructure to weaken Iran’s military and economic capabilities. Israeli officials emphasized that operations continue while negotiations for a ceasefire proceed, warning that Iran has used talks to buy time for further attacks.

Broader Impact on Iran’s industrial capacity

Recent Israeli strikes have also hit steel production facilities, further limiting Tehran’s capacity to produce weapons, while Iran has responded with attacks on industrial sites in Israel and Gulf countries.
