Sharjah24/AFP: Donald Trump pledged on Friday that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened, with or without Iran’s cooperation, stressing that preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons remains his top priority in ongoing peace efforts.

Trump has dispatched Vice President JD Vance to Pakistan to engage with senior Iranian officials, aiming to secure a peace agreement following a two-week ceasefire reached earlier in the week.

Strategic importance of the strait

Speaking to reporters before departing Washington, Trump said the waterway would be reopened soon, emphasising its importance. The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s crude oil passes, is expected to be a central issue in talks in Islamabad.

When asked what would define a successful deal, Trump said the absence of nuclear weapons would account for the vast majority of the agreement, underscoring the administration’s focus on curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
