Sharjah 24 – WAM: Saqr Ghobash, Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), said the Palestinian cause today is marked by a widening gap between clear international principles and hesitant political will to implement them, describing this as a core issue shaping the conflict.

Remarks at IPU meeting in Istanbul

He made the remarks during the Group of Parliaments Supporting Palestine meeting held on the sidelines of the 152nd Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Istanbul under the theme “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations.”

Appreciation for Türkiye’s hosting

Ghobash expressed appreciation to Türkiye and its Grand National Assembly for hosting the meeting, noting the importance of the gathering at a time of escalating regional tensions and crises.

Broader regional context of the conflict

He said the Palestinian issue cannot be isolated from wider regional developments, including violations of sovereignty, threats to security, and tensions over strategic waterways.

Longstanding unresolved crisis

Ghobash stressed that the Palestinian cause is not only a territorial dispute but a long-standing test of the international system, noting repeated attempts at resolution have not changed the underlying reality.

UAE’s position on Palestine

He reaffirmed the UAE’s position supporting an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, along with backing for a just and lasting peace as the preferred solution.

Humanitarian support and leadership approach

He highlighted that the UAE’s leadership, under Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has maintained consistent humanitarian support, noting the country’s significant contribution to international aid efforts, including in Gaza.

Call for unity and political solution

Ghobash concluded that achieving a Palestinian state requires internal unity, unified decision-making, and genuine international support translated into a clear political process leading to a comprehensive settlement.
