Sharjah 24: With a vision that has made women’s sport in Sharjah a space for empowerment and achievement, the Sharjah Women Sports has continued translating the ongoing support it receives from His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and his wife, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Women Sports, through the standout presence of its athletes within UAE national teams competing at the 4th GCC Games “Doha 2026”.

The athletes contributed to the UAE winning 21 medals — five gold, eight silver and eight bronze — across taekwondo, shooting, table tennis, fencing, athletics, and archery.

This medal tally came through the participation of 28 athletes from the clubs of the Sharjah Women Sports within the UAE national delegation, reflecting the role of the Sharjah Women’s Sports and its clubs in supplying national teams with athletes capable of competing at high levels and contributing to UAE sport through a system that spans talent identification, expanding participation, improving performance, and preparing athletes for international competitions.

Emerging generation shines

The significance of the participation extended beyond medal numbers, with several technically important results emerging, particularly through national and personal records and strong performances by young athletes competing in senior women’s events.

Among the standouts were Shahad Rashid, Alya Khalid Al Muhairi, Fatima Al Suwaidi and Amna Al Loghani, who provided clear indicators of the development of a new generation capable of competing at higher levels.

Shahad Rashid attracted attention in athletics by winning silver in pole vault after setting a new UAE record of 3.25 metres, alongside achieving her personal best at only 16 years old. The achievement stood out because of the technical demands of the event, which requires years of training, precise timing and high physical and technical capability.

Sixteen-year-old Alya Khalid Al Muhairi secured bronze in the 3,000m steeplechase with a personal-best time of 12:08.73, an important result in an event that demands endurance, balanced race pacing and sustained physical readiness.

Shooting and taekwondo achievements

In shooting, 17-year-old Fatima Al Suwaidi delivered an impressive performance in the women’s 10m air rifle event, claiming silver with 247.1 points before adding bronze in the 10m air rifle mixed doubles event, reinforcing her progress in a discipline heavily dependent on focus and mental composure under pressure.

In taekwondo, Amna Al Loghani earned the UAE gold in the under-67kg category. The 17-year-old secured victory against more experienced opponents, while Maha Rabie added silver in the under-57kg division, giving the sport a strong presence within the medal collection of Sharjah Women Sports.

Archery and shooting success

In archery, Amna Al Awadhi won two gold medals — one in the women’s compound bow individual event and another in the women’s compound bow team event alongside teammate Meitha Al Nuaimi.

Hessa Al Awadhi and Fatima Al Baloushi contributed to silver in the women’s recurve team event, while Hessa Al Awadhi also secured bronze in the mixed recurve team event alongside Omar Al Ali.

In shooting, Ghayah Al Shehail won silver in the women’s 10m air pistol event and helped secure bronze in the team event alongside Mahra Al Suwaidi and Intisar Al Junaibi. She later added gold in the mixed doubles 10m air pistol event alongside Mohammed Al Kaabi.

Fencing and athletics results

Fencing also delivered strong results. Zainab Mousa contributed to gold in the women’s foil team competition and added bronze in the individual foil event.

Shaikha Al Zaabi claimed bronze in individual épée, while competing alongside Fajr Al Marzouqi and Lamar Al Nahla to secure silver in the team épée competition.

In table tennis, Noura Al Mazmi helped achieve silver in the doubles event, highlighting the presence of Sharjah Women’s Sports Club athletes in fast-paced technical sports.

In athletics, Mahra Abdulrahim won silver in the 400m hurdles, while Alyazia Tareq earned bronze in pole vault. Fatima Al Baloushi, Mahra Abdulrahim and Shahad Rashid also contributed to bronze in the women’s 4x100m relay.

Young basketball squad gains experience

In women’s 3x3 basketball, the UAE fielded a youthful squad featuring Sharjah Women Sports club players aged between 17 and 19 years old.

The experience provided valuable exposure against stronger regional opponents. Shaikha Hassan Al Kaabi and Nada Al Jallaf emerged as key attacking options for the team in what represented an important development stage for a promising generation seeking greater competitive experience.

Officials praise athlete development system

Hanan Al Mahmoud, Vice Chairperson of the Sharjah Women Sports, said the participation of 28 athletes from Sharjah Women Sports clubs within UAE national teams reflected the success of the institution’s athlete development system.

She said: “We are proud of what our athletes delivered at the GCC Games and of their contribution to raising the UAE flag within the national teams. This achievement would not have been possible without the tremendous support sport receives in Sharjah from His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, and the continued support of his wife, Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Chairperson of the Sharjah Women Sports, whose vision and backing have been essential foundations for developing women’s sport and empowering athletes.”

She added: “The participation of 28 athletes from clubs of Sharjah Women Sports reflects an integrated pathway we have worked on for years, beginning with expanding participation and talent discovery, moving through preparation and development programmes, and culminating in representing the nation at Gulf and international events. What was achieved in Doha confirms that investing in athletes from an early age and providing an organised and supportive training environment helps build a sporting generation capable of competing and contributing to the future of UAE sport.”

Technical progress highlighted

Moza Al Shamsi, Director of the Sharjah Women Sports, said the athletes’ results at “Doha GCC Games 2026” carried important technical indicators, particularly with the achievement of a new national record and several personal bests.

She said: “This participation gives us important technical insight into athlete development because success was not limited to podium finishes but included new records and high-quality performances across different disciplines. Setting a national record in pole vault and achieving personal bests in athletics, alongside strong performances in shooting, taekwondo and archery, all confirm that our technical work is progressing clearly.”

She added: “We continue building an integrated system that supports athletes technically, physically and mentally while linking talent discovery, performance development and ongoing care. What our athletes achieved in Doha strengthens our confidence in the ability of clubs of Sharjah Women Sports to remain a sustainable source of talent for national teams and help prepare athletes capable of representing the UAE with distinction in future competitions.”

The results reinforce the growing role of the Sharjah Women Sports and its clubs in supporting UAE sport by preparing athletes capable of progressing from development stages to elite competition and from participation to achievement.

The performances also highlight the emergence of a promising generation of talent under the age of 16 capable of making an impact in future competitions and continuing the UAE’s presence on medal podiums.
