Islamic teachings emphasise that pilgrims performing either Qiran or Ifrad proceed to Mina on the Day of Tarwiyah and stay there overnight before heading to Arafat.
Pilgrims performing Tamattu enter the state of ihram from their places of residence inside or outside Makkah. All pilgrims remain in Mina until sunrise on the ninth of Dhul Hijjah, before departing for Arafat to perform the main Hajj. They later return to Mina after leaving Arafat and spending the night in Muzdalifah, where they stay during the days of Tashreeq (10, 11, 12 and 13 Dhul Hijjah) to perform the stoning of the three Jamarat.
Mina is situated between Makkah and Muzdalifah, around seven kilometres northeast of the Grand Mosque. It is part of the sacred precinct of Makkah and is surrounded by mountains to the north and south. The area is inhabited only during the Hajj season, bordered by Jamarat Al Aqabah on the Makkah side and the Valley of Muhassir on the Muzdalifah side.
