Sharjah 13: His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and President of the University of Sharjah, commended the university for its remarkable and unprecedented achievements. The institution attained the 26th position globally, the fourth position within the Arab world, and the leading position among universities in the United Arab Emirates in its inaugural participation in the Times Higher Education Interdisciplinary Science Rankings 2026. This esteemed global ranking evaluates universities based on their performance in interdisciplinary research.

His Highness commended this accomplishment, which reflects the excellence and advancement of the education system in the Emirate of Sharjah, particularly in the context of higher education. His Highness emphasized that this ranking is indicative of the significant efforts expended by the university at all levels to enhance its development, ensure ongoing progress, and provide comprehensive support for its distinguished journey in higher education and scientific research.

This notable achievement represents a historic advancement for higher education in the United Arab Emirates, as the University of Sharjah stands as the first Emirati institution to attain such progress in a specialized global ranking that assesses universities' contributions to multidisciplinary scientific research. This research is essential for addressing complex global challenges, including climate change, food security, digital transformation, and public health.

This success is a testament to the ambitious academic and research strategy instituted by the University of Sharjah, which has established a clear framework for transforming the university into a global leader in scientific research and innovation. It has led to a series of significant accomplishments at local, regional, and international levels. The progress also underscores the university's commitment to excellence in multidisciplinary scientific research, along with its investment in recent years to construct an integrated research system. This system includes advanced infrastructure, the recruitment of a select group of distinguished researchers and academics from around the globe, and the establishment of three specialized research institutes, comprising 86 research groups that promote collaboration across diverse scientific disciplines.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings represent the inaugural global initiative designed to evaluate universities' performance in interdisciplinary scientific research. In the 2026 edition, nearly 1,300 universities participated, with 911 universities meeting the criteria for inclusion in the ranking.

The ranking employs a rigorous methodology that assesses research performance through three primary dimensions: inputs, focusing on research funding; processes, evaluating research infrastructure and facilities; and outputs, which encompass the quantity and quality of research publications and their citation impact across various disciplines. This methodology utilizes 11 detailed indicators that measure funding, infrastructure, the quality of scientific output, and its global influence.
