Dr Seidah, Director of the Biochemical Neuroendocrinology Research Unit at Montreal’s Clinical Research Institute (IRCM), was recognized for his pioneering work on heart health and cholesterol regulation. He discovered the PCSK9 enzyme, which plays a critical role in controlling blood cholesterol levels, leading to the development of PCSK9 inhibitors, widely used to reduce cardiovascular risk. Over his career, he has published more than 820 scientific papers, cited over 71,000 times. His research has also contributed to understanding fatty liver disease, obesity, cancer, and viral mechanisms, supporting the development of new treatments across multiple medical fields.
Launched by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Great Arab Minds initiative recognizes outstanding Arab talent in medicine, engineering, natural sciences, architecture, and economics. The program aims to renew the Arab region’s contribution to global knowledge and scientific progress while encouraging the next generation of innovators.
Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, informed Dr Seidah of his award during a video call, highlighting the impact of his research on developing new medicines and treatments. The 2025 committee included prominent figures such as Dr Amer Sharif, Prof Elias Zerhouni, Prof Alawi Sheikh Ali, and Prof Huda Akil.
Now in its third edition, Great Arab Minds is the largest initiative of its kind in the Arab world. It celebrates leading Arab specialists, encourages scientific and intellectual progress, and showcases contributions that have gained global recognition.
