Sharjah24 - AFP: All 40 people killed in the devastating New Year’s fire at a ski resort in Crans-Montana have now been formally identified, Swiss authorities confirmed on Sunday. Half of the victims were under the age of 18.

Victims from multiple nationalities

Police said the victims’ ages ranged from 39 to two teenagers aged just 14. The dead included 21 Swiss nationals, nine French citizens, six Italians, as well as one victim each from Belgium, Portugal, Romania and Turkey. Several victims held dual or multiple nationalities.

Applause for exhausted rescuers

Following the silent gathering, mourners moved slowly toward the site and the makeshift memorial outside. A wave of applause broke out as rescuers and emergency workers passed through the crowd, many visibly overwhelmed by the public’s show of gratitude.

National and international mourning

Switzerland has declared January 9 a national day of mourning, with church bells set to toll nationwide and a moment of silence planned in remembrance of the victims.
