Sharjah 24 – KUNA: The US Senate voted 52–47 on Thursday to advance a resolution that would bar President Donald Trump from taking further military action in or against Venezuela without prior authorisation from Congress. The move reflects lawmakers’ efforts to reassert congressional authority over decisions involving military force.

Bipartisan support and leadership

The legislation was led by Democratic Senator Tim Kaine and backed by Republican Senator Rand Paul, with several other Republicans joining Democrats in supporting the resolution. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer also championed the measure, underscoring bipartisan concern about unchecked executive power in military engagements.

Trump’s reaction

President Trump criticissed the vote sharply, saying on social media that senators who supported the resolution should be “ashamed” and claiming it weakens national security and his authority as commander in chief. He also called the War Powers Act unconstitutional and hinted at future Senate action on the matter.

Constitutional authority and next steps

If fully passed by both chambers and signed into law, the resolution would require congressional approval for future military operations related to Venezuela. However, analysts note the measure faces hurdles, including potential presidential veto and further debate in Congress on its final passage.
