The Bavarian giants fell behind in the first half after Brazilian Romulo Cardoso scored for Leipzig in the 20th minute. Bayern then staged a powerful comeback in the second half through goals from Serge Gnabry (50), England striker Harry Kane (67), Jonathan Tah (82), Aleksandar Pavlović (85) and French winger Michael Olise (88).
Romulo: We lost focus
Leipzig goal-scorer Romulo said after the match: “We played at a very high level for 75 minutes, then I don’t know what happened. We lost our concentration. We have to learn from this.”
Bayern extend lead at the top
Bayern recorded their fourth consecutive victory since drawing 2–2 with Mainz in round 14, and their 16th win of the season alongside two draws, remaining unbeaten in the Bundesliga. They now sit top of the table with 50 points, restoring an 11-point gap over second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who edged bottom side St Pauli 3–2.
Under Belgian coach Vincent Kompany, Bayern have dropped just four points so far this season and are on course to match the record tally of 50 points after 18 matches. Bayern’s total of 71 goals also represents a Bundesliga record at this stage of the season.
Kompany praises second-half response
Kompany admitted Leipzig were “twice as good as us” in the first half, but added: “In the second half, the players delivered an outstanding performance. We did not feel fear and we gave everything.”
Leipzig miss chance to climb table
Leipzig failed to reclaim third place, remaining on 32 points, one behind Hoffenheim, who recorded their second consecutive win by defeating visitors Bayer Leverkusen 1–0 through a ninth-minute goal from Dutchman Wouter Burger.
Dortmund escape late against St Pauli
Borussia Dortmund, who were coming off a 3–0 win over Werder Bremen in the previous round, narrowly avoided a shock defeat at home to St Pauli. Dortmund took the lead at Signal Iduna Park through Julian Brandt (45+1) and Karim Adeyemi (54), but St Pauli stunned the hosts with two goals in 10 minutes, scored by American James Sands (62) and substitute Ricky-Jade Jones (72).
In the final moments, the Video Assistant Referee overturned a decision that initially ruled a foul by substitute striker Maximilian Beier outside the penalty area. Dortmund were awarded a penalty, which captain Emre Can converted in the sixth minute of stoppage time to secure a dramatic 3–2 victory.
More struggles for St Pauli and Mainz
St Pauli suffered their second consecutive defeat following their previous 2–1 loss to Wolfsburg, and their 11th defeat of the season, leaving them bottom of the table on 12 points. They are level on goal difference with second-bottom Mainz, who lost 2–1 away to Cologne.
Cologne fell behind to a goal from Stefan Bell in the 29th minute, but responded through substitute Ragnar Ache, who scored twice in the 56th and 85th minutes.
Draw elsewhere
Elsewhere, Wolfsburg drew 1–1 at home with Heidenheim.
