The Ministry of Education said classes were suspended in 52 of the country’s 69 provinces following an “urgent” weather alert. Forecasts indicate that wind speeds could reach 120 kilometres per hour on Wednesday, affecting large parts of the country, including the capital, Algiers.
Algeria’s civil defence authorities urged residents to exercise extreme caution, advising the public to prepare alternative lighting that does not rely on electricity, stay away from windows and power poles, and avoid unnecessary travel.
The decision follows severe weather last week that led to two deaths, including a child, according to civil defence officials.
Heavy rainfall recently caused widespread flooding across several areas, including Relizane, Algiers and Tipaza, inundating neighbourhoods and cutting off multiple roads. Authorities remain on high alert amid concerns that the incoming storm could worsen conditions.
Neighbouring Tunisia has also been affected by heavy rainfall in recent days, with reports of fatalities from flooding and maritime incidents.
