Young star Lamine Yamal rescued Barcelona by scoring from the penalty spot in the sixth minute of stoppage time (90+6). Newcastle had taken the lead earlier through Harvey Barnes in the 86th minute.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick fielded a strong starting line-up including Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Pedri, Fermín Lopez, and Ronald Araújo, replacing Ferran Torres, Marcus Rashford, Dani Olmo, Marc Casado, and Eric García, who had started in the recent La Liga match against Athletic Bilbao.
Meanwhile, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe relied on William Osula, scorer of the winning goal against Manchester United, along with Anthony Elanga and Harvey Barnes to lead the attack. Winger Anthony Gordon, the competition’s second-top scorer with 10 goals behind Kylian Mbappé (13), started on the bench.
Newcastle dominated possession and created more chances in the first half but failed to seriously trouble Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García, who comfortably handled attempts from Sandro Tonali (4) and Anthony Elanga (33).
Barcelona responded with a shot from Fermín López, though Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale dealt with it easily in the 36th minute.
Newcastle continued to push in the second half, seeking to capitalise on home advantage. They threatened through Elanga (50) and Osula (56), while García denied a strong attempt from Barnes (58).
Barnes eventually broke the deadlock in the 86th minute, finishing a close-range volley from a cross by substitute Jacob Murphy.
However, Barcelona were awarded a late penalty after Malick Thiaw fouled substitute Dani Olmo. Referee Marco Guida pointed to the spot, and Lamine Yamal converted confidently, sending the ball to the right of Ramsdale in 90+6.
The decisive second leg will take place at Camp Nou on 18 March.
