Access to North Korea remains tightly restricted, with entry largely limited to travellers on business, study, or special assignments. The country had effectively sealed its borders in 2020 during the pandemic, cutting itself off from most international travel.
The flight departed Beijing Capital Airport in the morning and arrived at Pyongyang’s Sunan International Airport later the same day. Operated by a Boeing 737-700 with a capacity of up to 128 passengers, the service offers economy tickets priced at around $200, with return flights scheduled from Pyongyang.
China remains North Korea’s largest trading partner and a crucial source of economic and diplomatic support. The resumption of flights and train services highlights Beijing’s continued role as a vital link for Pyongyang amid its cautious reopening.
While China has fully reopened post-pandemic, North Korea is moving more slowly. It has already restored some transport links with Russia, and earlier flight services between Beijing and Pyongyang had resumed through North Korea’s national carrier.
Before the pandemic, Chinese visitors made up the majority of foreign tourists to North Korea, contributing significantly to its economy. Although the return of flights may improve accessibility, there is still no clear timeline for the return of Western tourism.
