Sharjah 24 – WAM: The Ursula von der Leyen affirmed that the security of the Gulf and Europe is closely interconnected, stressing the European Union’s solidarity with the Gulf Cooperation Council and its member states in confronting what she described as unjustified attacks by Iran.

Meeting with GCC Secretary-General in Brussels

Her remarks came after a meeting in Brussels with Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, where both sides discussed regional developments and the need for stronger EU–Gulf cooperation.

Concerns over regional escalation and nuclear issue

Von der Leyen stressed that recent developments highlight why Iran must not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons, underscoring the importance of regional stability and security.

Strengthening EU–GCC cooperation

She praised the mediation and solidarity efforts of Gulf states in global crises, including the Russia–Ukraine war, and said the upcoming EU–GCC summit will be an important opportunity to deepen relations.

Continued dialogue ahead of Cyprus discussions

Von der Leyen also noted that she looks forward to further discussions during upcoming meetings in Cyprus next week as part of ongoing diplomatic engagement.
