Sharjah24 - WAM: Within the “Year of Better Practices” initiative, Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chair of the Kimberley Process and representative of the United Arab Emirates as the “Custodian Chair,” delivered a high-level briefing to the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He outlined the key achievements of the UAE’s 2025 chairmanship.

He also addressed the resolution led by the UAE entitled “The Role of Diamonds in Fueling Conflict,” which was adopted unanimously by the UN General Assembly.
Broad international support
The resolution, co-sponsored by 50 countries, reflects the main outcomes and decisions reached during the UAE’s presidency. It strengthens the Kimberley Process’s mission to establish a global diamond trade free from conflict.
Strengthening governance and support mechanisms
The resolution represents international recognition of the UAE’s key achievements during its 2025 chairmanship. These include launching technical assistance initiatives to support diamond-producing communities, strengthening governance frameworks and operational mechanisms, and making tangible progress in the structural review of the Kimberley Process. These efforts aim to address challenges faced by artisanal and small-scale mining communities.
Global commitment to conflict-free diamond trade
Although the resolution is not legally binding, it reinforces the international commitment to promoting a conflict-free diamond trade. It also highlights the UAE’s leading role in advancing the Kimberley Process and enhancing its global impact.
