Sharjah 24 – Reuters: US President Donald Trump said he believes the nuclear agreement currently being negotiated with Iran will be stronger than the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which he previously called “the worst deal ever.”

Criticism of the 2015 nuclear deal

Trump reiterated his stance in a social media post, saying the emerging agreement with Iran will be “far better” than the JCPOA, which was signed in 2015 between Iran and world powers including the United States, France, Germany, China, the United Kingdom, and Russia.

Background of US–Iran tensions

The United States withdrew from the 2015 deal in 2018 during Trump’s first term, and tensions have since escalated, including recent strikes involving the US and Israel aimed at preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Uncertainty over ongoing negotiations

While a temporary ceasefire is expected to expire soon, it remains unclear when or whether further talks between the US and Iran will resume. Trump added that he is “under no pressure” and expects developments to happen relatively quickly, although experts note that negotiating a comprehensive nuclear agreement typically takes years.
