Sharjah 24 – WAM: The Fujairah Environment Authority (FEA), in collaboration with the Fujairah Research Centre, released a group of rehabilitated green turtles (Chelonia mydas) at Al Aqah beach after successful medical treatment and recovery.

Conservation and tracking project

The release is part of a research initiative funded by Atlantis Dubai to monitor turtle migration patterns and nesting sites using motion sensors, supporting long-term marine conservation efforts.

Supporting habitat restoration

Data collected from the project will help develop evidence-based conservation strategies, including coral reef restoration initiatives involving local volunteers.

Commitment to biodiversity protection

Asila Abdullah Al Mualla, Director of the FEA, said the initiative reflects the authority’s commitment to protecting Fujairah’s biodiversity through strategic partnerships.

Sea turtle species in the UAE

Of the seven sea turtle species worldwide, five are found in the UAE. Hawksbill turtles are the only species known to nest annually along the western coastline, while only three nesting records have been confirmed on the eastern coast, with none recorded in Fujairah.

Public support for marine life rescue

The FEA has also launched a dedicated hotline (800TURTLE) for reporting distressed marine life to support ongoing rescue and conservation efforts.
