Sharjah24 - AFP: A car drove into a crowd in the historic centre of Leipzig on Monday, killing two people and injuring several others, according to authorities. The vehicle travelled through a busy pedestrian area after leaving a central square, covering a significant distance before coming to a stop.

Driver arrested, motive unclear

Police arrested a 33-year-old German man at the scene. Authorities said the motive remains unclear, with no indication so far of a political or religious background. Investigators believe the suspect acted alone and confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Casualties and emergency response

Officials reported that the victims were a 63-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man. Several people sustained serious injuries, while around 20 others were treated for minor wounds. Emergency services, including firefighters, medical teams and helicopters, responded quickly to the scene.

Investigation examines possible mental health factors

Authorities described the incident using a term often linked to uncontrolled violent acts associated with psychological instability. The suspect is under investigation on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.

Context of similar incidents in Germany

The incident adds to a series of car-ramming attacks in Germany in recent years, including cases in Berlin, Munich, and a fatal attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg in 2024.

City returns to normal activity

Following the incident, life in Leipzig began to resume, with businesses reopening and residents returning to public spaces near the affected area.
