State media showed Myanmar’s leader Min Aung Hlaing examining the 2.2-kilogram stone at his office after it was presented following its discovery.
The ruby was unearthed in the Mogok area, a region in Mandalay known for producing some of the world’s most valuable gemstones, including rare “pigeon-blood” rubies.
Authorities described the stone as exceptionally rare, with a purplish-red colour and yellowish tones, and said it has high-grade quality in terms of colour, clarity, and overall characteristics.
Although smaller than a 21,450-carat ruby discovered in 1996 in the same region, officials said the new stone is considered more valuable due to its superior quality.
Myanmar’s ruby industry is globally renowned but loosely regulated, while the country continues to face political instability following the 2021 military coup and ongoing conflict.
