A spokesperson for former President Donald Trump confirmed that he was briefed on what was initially described as a “tragic” incident while in Florida, before the fatalities were officially announced. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said: “The individual who shot the two National Guardsmen — both of whom were critically wounded and are now in separate hospitals — is also seriously injured, but will, regardless, face a very steep price.”
West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey issued a statement expressing deep sorrow, confirming that both Guardsmen had succumbed to their injuries.
He stated: “These brave West Virginians lost their lives in the service of their country. We are in ongoing contact with federal officials as the investigation continues.”
