Sharjah24 - AFP: Eight children have been killed in a domestic violence shooting in the southern US state of Louisiana, in an attack that unfolded across three locations in the city of Shreveport.

Authorities say a 31-year-old man carried out the early morning shootings, killing seven of his own children along with another child who was a relative. The victims included three boys and five girls aged between three and 11.

Injuries and survivor

Two women were seriously injured in the attack, including the mother of several of the children. One child survived with non-life-threatening injuries after the suspect moved between residences.

Emergency services were alerted in the early hours after an injured woman sought help from a neighbour.

Police pursuit and suspect killed

Police say the suspect fled in a carjacked vehicle and was pursued by officers. He was shot dead by police after exiting the vehicle with a firearm at the end of the chase.

Investigators say the incident is being treated as a domestic disturbance and that the suspect is believed to be the sole gunman. The motive remains under investigation as authorities continue to examine multiple crime scenes.

Officials confirmed that the suspect had a prior firearms-related conviction in 2019 but no known history of domestic violence had been recorded.

Community shock and national context

Local authorities described the killings as a devastating event, noting the particularly distressing loss of young children. Community members gathered near one of the homes, leaving flowers in memory of the victims.

The attack is the deadliest mass shooting in the United States in more than two years, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive.

The United States continues to record high levels of gun-related deaths compared with other developed nations, with firearms widely accessible and thousands of fatalities reported each year.
