Sharjah24 - AFP: Samsung on Tuesday unveiled its first triple-folding smartphone— a special-edition Galaxy Z TriFold positioned far above the mainstream market due to its exceptionally high price.

The device will be available on 12 December, retailing at $2,443, which is more than double the cost of the iPhone 17.

A larger, Ultra-thin display

The Galaxy Z TriFold is remarkably slim and unfolds into a 10-inch (25.4 cm) screen, offering what Samsung describes as expanded possibilities for productivity and creativity.

Although Samsung is gaining attention for the innovation, the triple-fold mechanism is not a global first. Huawei released a similar device last year, also at a premium price point.

Standing out in a competitive market

With smartphone sales slowing in many regions, manufacturers are increasingly turning to bold designs and standout features to attract customers.

Samsung’s new device, available only in black, weighs 309 grams (10.9 ounces) and is under 0.2 inches thick at its thinnest point.

Built-in generative AI features

The phone integrates advanced generative AI tools, enabling real-time assistance through screen-sharing or camera-sharing capabilities.

Samsung confirmed the device is “not intended for mass sales,” reinforcing its status as a collector-style or showcase product.

Executive insight

Alex Lim, Executive Vice President at Samsung Electronics, described the Galaxy Z TriFold as a “special edition” model designed to highlight the company’s innovative strengths.

Market context: Apple closing in

The launch coincides with new industry projections indicating that Apple may surpass Samsung for the first time in 14 years, potentially becoming the world’s top smartphone producer through 2029.

Apple is also widely rumored to be developing its first foldable iPhone, possibly set to debut next year.

According to Counterpoint Research, Apple’s smartphone shipments are forecast to reach a 19.4% global market share in 2025, compared to Samsung’s 18.7%, signalling a major shift in industry leadership.
