Sharjah24-AFP: Emergency officials in Washington State issued urgent evacuation orders on Monday after a levee along the Green River breached following days of heavy rainfall.

The Desimone Levee in Tukwila, just south of Seattle, collapsed, prompting the National Weather Service (NWS) to issue a flash flood warning for over 46,000 residents in affected areas of Tukwila, Renton, and Kent. "Conditions are dangerous, and access routes may be lost at any time,” the NWS Seattle office warned on X, urging residents in designated zones to leave without delay.

Road closures and traffic disruptions

The breach caused widespread flooding that led to the closure of several major motorways in the region. Evacuation traffic caused severe congestion along alternative routes, as shown in live feeds from the Washington Department of Transportation. The rapidly evolving situation has raised concerns about further infrastructure impacts if water levels continue to rise.

National Guard deployed as rains continue

The Washington National Guard, already mobilised due to ongoing severe weather, deployed additional personnel to assist with evacuations and support emergency response efforts near the breached levé. Heavy rains have battered the Pacific Northwest and western Canada for several days, leading to repeated flood alerts, property damage, and community evacuations across the region.
