The US National Weather Service warned that a “strong atmospheric river” will bring heavy rain, snow, and damaging winds across northern, central, and southern California through Friday, urging residents to exercise extreme caution. Meteorologist Ariel Cohen advised people to reconsider holiday travel plans, citing hazardous road conditions.
The storm, driven by the “Pineapple Express” weather pattern, is expected to bring several days of intense rainfall and snowfall. Some areas of Southern California could receive up to 12 inches of rain, increasing the risk of flooding, mudslides, and rockslides, particularly in mountainous and canyonous regions.
Officials warned that regions affected by recent wildfires remain particularly vulnerable to debris flows. More than 200 homes in Los Angeles County were placed under evacuation orders, while flood watches were issued across wide areas of the state.
In the Sierra Nevada, more than a foot of snow has already fallen, with up to five feet forecast before the storm subsides. Wind gusts of up to 55 mph may bring down trees and cause power outages, authorities said.
