The Ukrainian army stated that the withdrawal was carried out "to preserve the lives of our soldiers and the combat capability of our units." Russian forces reportedly held a "significant advantage in manpower and equipment," aided by weather conditions.
Despite the withdrawal, Ukrainian forces continue to engage Russian troops in the outskirts of Siversk. The town remains within the reach of Ukraine’s artillery and defensive fire, according to Kyiv’s General Staff.
Russia captured Siversk nearly two weeks ago, with Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov reporting the gain to President Vladimir Putin. The Russian army has steadily advanced through eastern Ukraine, targeting the Donetsk region, with Kramatorsk and Sloviansk remaining the last major Ukrainian-held cities in the area.
Siversk, previously home to around 11,000 residents, lies 30 kilometers east of Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. Eastern Ukraine has suffered extensive destruction since Russia’s February 2022 invasion, with tens of thousands killed and millions displaced.
The Donetsk region remains a central issue in US-led settlement talks, with Ukraine under pressure to cede more territory to Russia. At a recent year-end press conference, Putin signaled intentions to continue territorial gains in eastern Ukraine.
