South African festival turns deadly after lightning strike

Sharjah24-AFP: South African health authorities confirmed that two people were killed and dozens were injured after lightning struck a large group attending a traditional festival north of the capital, Pretoria.

The incident occurred on Saturday night near the village of Mathibestad, around 70 kilometres north of Pretoria, where an annual traditional celebration was taking place. According to the North West health department, lightning struck while approximately 150 people were gathered at the event.

Dozens rushed to medical facilities

Health officials said 150 people sought medical treatment at a local clinic following the strike. Two victims were pronounced dead, while 13 others sustained critical injuries and were transferred to another medical facility for advanced care. The remaining injured were treated for varying degrees of lightning-related injuries.

Seasonal storms increase risk

Authorities noted that thunderstorms are common in this region of South Africa during the southern hemisphere summer, increasing the risk of lightning-related incidents, particularly during outdoor gatherings.
