With the update, the Gemini side panel—which previously appeared by tapping the Gemini spark icon next to the profile photo—will no longer be available to AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers in the US. Google said the change is aimed at making AI easier to use directly within Gmail.
The Gemini side panel allowed users to summarise email threads, suggest and draft replies, search previous emails and Google Drive files, access Google Calendar information, and create calendar events.
Most of these capabilities are now integrated into Gmail through in-line AI tools. “Help Me Write” remains unchanged, while “Proofread” has been upgraded to provide more advanced spelling, grammar, and style suggestions. Suggested Replies have also been enhanced to better reflect the context of email conversations.
AI Overviews can now summarise longer email threads, while similar AI-powered summaries in Google Search offer a more seamless and integrated experience, according to reports from ABC News.
The Gemini side panel has been removed from personal Gmail accounts with the new features enabled on the web, though it remains available on Android mobile devices. There are no changes to the availability of the Gemini side panel for Google Workspace users.
