Sharjah24-AFP: Japan has launched a deep-sea exploration mission to extract rare earth minerals and reduce its dependence on China. The scientific drilling vessel Chikyu departed Shimizu Port in Shizuoka on Monday for the remote Pacific island of Minami Torishima, where mineral-rich deposits are believed to lie at depths of around 6,000 metres.

Geopolitical and supply chain concerns

The test voyage comes amid heightened tensions with China, the world’s largest supplier of rare earths, and growing concern in Japan about supply chain vulnerabilities. Beijing has previously used its dominance in rare earths as geopolitical leverage, and recent export restrictions have fuelled fears of potential supply disruptions.

Potential for domestic production

The project could pave the way for domestic rare earth production, supporting key industries such as electric vehicles, renewable energy and defence. The Minami Torishima area is estimated to contain more than 16 million tonnes of rare earths. The mission is scheduled to run until 14 February.
