Sharjah 24: Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah, part of Emirates Health Services, has been awarded the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), achieving the platinum rating—the highest level for green buildings. This makes it the first government hospital in the UAE to receive this distinction.

Sustainable care

Dr Arif Al Nooryani, Director of Al Qassimi Hospital, expressed pride at the hospital’s achievement. He said the award reflects the combined efforts of the hospital team and their commitment to applying international best practices in designing and running healthcare facilities.

He added: “At Al Qassimi Hospital, we focus on providing a safe, healthy, and sustainable environment. Our advanced systems improve comfort for patients, visitors, and staff while protecting the environment. We will continue investing in green technologies, supported by Emirates Health Services, to deliver high-quality medical care for future generations.”

Leadership in action

Waheed Al Mulla, Director of Facilities and Administrative Services at Emirates Health Services, said the certification demonstrates the organization's dedication to building sustainable healthcare facilities in line with international environmental standards. He noted that the platinum rating reflects careful management of energy and water, reducing emissions, and improving indoor conditions.

Al Mulla added: “This achievement strengthens our commitment to national sustainability goals and the development of smart healthcare facilities. It sets a practical example of how hospitals can operate efficiently while protecting the environment, in line with the UAE’s 2050 Climate Neutral Strategy.”

High standards

The LEED certification recognises Al Qassimi Hospital's practical achievements in running a sustainable facility. Its energy-saving systems, water management initiatives, and careful design of patient areas have reduced environmental impact while maintaining comfort and safety. The platinum rating confirms that every part of the hospital’s operation meets the highest standards for efficiency and performance.

Setting the example

This award demonstrates Emirates Health Services’ leadership in building hospitals that prioritise both the environment and patient care. The hospital demonstrates how sustainable practices, such as installing energy-efficient lighting and water-saving systems and designing spaces that enhance staff workflow and patient experience, can be applied in everyday healthcare operations while also contributing to the UAE’s broader sustainability and climate goals.
