Sharjah 24 – AFP: Donald Trump announced Saturday that the United States will raise its global import tariff rate to 15 percent, following a Supreme Court ruling that curtailed much of his existing tariff programme.

The decision doubles the 10 percent duty introduced immediately after the court’s judgment. Trump said the new rate represents the “fully allowed, and legally tested” level under current law.

Move follows Supreme Court ruling

The action comes a day after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled, in a 6–3 decision, that a 1977 law cited by Trump does not authorize the president to impose sweeping tariffs on individual countries.

Trump sharply criticized the ruling, calling it “extraordinarily anti-American,” and indicated his administration would explore alternative legal avenues to maintain its trade measures.

Temporary measure with exemptions

According to the White House, the 15 percent tariff is temporary and permitted for up to 150 days under existing law. Certain sectors — including pharmaceuticals — and goods covered by the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) remain exempt.

The move marks the latest shift in a year of fluctuating tariff policies that have repeatedly adjusted duties on both allies and rivals as part of Trump’s broader trade strategy.

Continued trade uncertainty

The White House also confirmed that countries that previously negotiated separate tariff deals with Washington will now be subject to the new global rate.

The latest development underscores ongoing legal and political tensions surrounding Trump’s aggressive trade agenda, which has faced increasing scrutiny from the courts and international partners alike.
