First-of-its-kind project in the UAE
The project is the first of its kind in the country. It was developed and implemented at the ministry’s headquarters in Sharjah during 2025 as part of a forward-looking plan to improve national readiness for electricity outage scenarios during emergencies and crises. It combines clean energy generation, storage, and management using advanced digital solutions.
Shift towards decentralised energy management
According to Eng. Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry for Energy and Infrastructure, the project represents a qualitative shift from traditional centralised grid-based systems to a smart decentralised model with independent operation capability. This improves electricity supply reliability, ensures continuity of essential services, and enhances resource efficiency while reducing costs and emissions.
Strong results in pilot phase
The pilot phase delivered measurable operational, environmental, and economic outcomes, including reducing energy consumption by around 362,000 kilowatt-hours annually, saving approximately AED 110,000 per year, and cutting carbon emissions by 76 tonnes annually. Solar energy contribution reached 30% of total electrical load, while the system achieved 100% operational resilience during unexpected outages.
A model for future energy infrastructure
Officials said microgrid systems represent a major shift in how energy systems are designed and operated in buildings. The project supports the UAE’s direction towards a more intelligent and sustainable energy ecosystem and establishes a national model for ensuring continuity of critical services under different conditions.
Expanding implementation across the country
The ministry plans to expand the application of this model nationwide, alongside developing a national technical and regulatory framework to standardise microgrid systems and enhance coordination between federal, local, and private sector entities.
Advancing the UAE’s sustainability vision
The project aligns with a national vision to reshape the energy sector through renewable energy and advanced digital technologies, strengthening infrastructure efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and positioning the UAE as a global leader in sustainable and resilient future energy systems.
