Sharjah 24 – AFP: Six years after Spain recorded its first Covid-19 case in the Canary Islands, residents are once again facing health concerns as a cruise ship affected by a deadly hantavirus outbreak prepares to arrive in Tenerife.

The MV Hondius is expected to dock this weekend after several people on board were affected by the outbreak, with reports confirming multiple deaths and medical evacuations. The vessel is due to arrive at the port of Granadilla in Tenerife, near the island’s southern airport.

Residents draw comparisons with the Covid-19 pandemic

The situation has revived memories of the coronavirus pandemic among residents, many of whom recall the uncertainty and economic hardship caused by lockdowns in 2020.

Locals in El Medano, near the arrival point of the ship, expressed concern and anxiety over the situation, although many also acknowledged the humanitarian need to assist passengers and crew stranded at sea.

Authorities stress low public health risk

Spain’s central government has stated that the ship’s arrival does not pose a threat to public health or tourism in the Canary Islands. The World Health Organization has also indicated that the global public health risk remains low despite the outbreak involving a rare strain transmissible between humans.

However, regional authorities in the Canary Islands have criticised Madrid over what they describe as insufficient communication and consultation regarding the handling of the ship’s arrival.

Concerns over tourism and regional treatment

The Canary Islands, heavily dependent on tourism, remain sensitive to events that could affect their international image. Local commentators compared the current tensions to previous frustrations over how the islands have handled migration pressures and emergency situations.

Despite concerns, tourism operators say bookings and visitor activity remain stable, expressing confidence that the situation will not significantly affect the sector.
