Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez addresses the media at La Moncloa Palace in Madrid in response to comments by US President Donald Trump
Sharjah 24 – AFP: Spain firmly denied US claims that it had agreed to support military operations against Iran, after President Donald Trump threatened trade reprisals over Madrid’s refusal to allow US forces to use its bases. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reiterated the government’s stance of “no to the war,” emphasizing that Spain will not participate in actions harmful to global security.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Spain had agreed to cooperate, but Spanish officials, including Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares, rejected the claim, confirming that Spain’s position on the bases and military action against Iran has not changed. The row drew support for Sanchez from the EU and leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, while Portugal conditionally allowed US use of its Azores base for defensive operations.
