Sharjah24/WAM: The League of Arab States has called on international and regional media and human rights institutions to take effective measures to ensure the physical safety of Palestinian journalists and guarantee their right to work in a secure environment.
The organisation also urged an end to the targeting and persecution of journalists, the destruction of Palestinian media infrastructure, and the imposition of strict restrictions on media activity.

World day of solidarity with Palestinian media

In a statement issued on Sunday to mark the World Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Media, the Arab League said the observance was established under Resolution No. 508 adopted by the Council of Arab Information Ministers during its 52nd regular session in Cairo.

The occasion, the statement said, serves as a reminder to the international community of the dangers facing Palestinian media networks amid continuing Israeli policies and the escalating systematic violations against Palestinian journalists and media institutions.

Palestinian territories among most dangerous areas for journalists

Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Media and Communication Sector at the Arab League, said the Palestinian territories had become among the most dangerous and deteriorating environments for practising journalism.

He stressed the symbolic and humanitarian importance of the World Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Media in supporting Palestinian journalists confronting Israeli violations aimed at obstructing journalistic work and preventing the transmission of facts on the ground to the world.

Support initiatives for Palestinian media

Khattabi also expressed the Media and Communication Sector’s aspiration to work with member states and observer organisations at the Council of Arab Information Ministers to support Palestinian media and journalism through technical assistance and professional training, in cooperation with the Palestinian Ministry of Information.

He praised a recent initiative to establish an independent fund aimed at providing sustainable support for Palestinian media in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, while enhancing professional capabilities in response to current challenges.
