Britain's Health Secretary Wes Streeting arrives at Downing Street to meet with the prime minister in central London
Sharjah 24 – AFP: British Prime Minister Keir Starmer faced growing political pressure on Thursday after Health Minister Wes Streeting resigned, calling for a leadership contest and accusing the government of lacking direction following Labour’s poor local election results.

Streeting said Britain needed “vision” instead of “drift,” arguing that Starmer would not lead the Labour Party into the next general election.

Leadership speculation grows inside Labour

While Streeting stopped short of triggering a formal leadership challenge, his resignation intensified speculation over Starmer’s future.

At the same time, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham announced plans to seek a parliamentary seat, fuelling further leadership speculation, while other Labour figures continued weighing potential bids.

Starmer vows to remain in office

Despite the turmoil, several senior ministers reaffirmed support for Starmer, who has vowed to remain in office and fight any leadership contest.

The political uncertainty has raised concerns among investors and business leaders about renewed instability in the UK government.
