Sharjah 24: The opening matches of the 7th edition of the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST 2024) kicks off, on Saturday, featuring intense basketball, volleyball, and fencing competitions, promising fans an exhilarating showcase of talent and teamwork from across the Arab world.
Organised by Sharjah Women's Sports (SWS), the competition's fixtures have been set through a series of draws during technical meetings for the respective games in addition to shooting. This year's AWST 2024 runs until February 12 and features 560 athletes and 63 teams from 15 Arab countries competing across eight sports disciplines, including table tennis, archery, athletics, and karate.

On Friday, the basketball technical meeting and the draw were held at the Coral Beach Hotel in Sharjah in the presence of dignitaries from the Arab and UAE Basketball Federations, along with representatives from the seven clubs vying for the championship title.

The basketball competition is structured to intensify the excitement, with a preliminary round-robin format determining the finalists. The top two teams will advance to the final match, while teams finishing third and fourth will have the chance to compete for the bronze medal on the final day, February 12.

The basketball games are scheduled thrice daily, starting at 11 AM, with subsequent matches at 1 PM and 3 PM. The opening matches at Al-Bataeh Club in the central region of Sharjah promise thrilling encounters, including a match between AWST 2020 champion Al-Fuhais from Jordan and Al-Fatat from Kuwait, alongside other inaugural day games featuring a faceoff between Capital Club - Saudi Arabia and Iraqi Ghaz Al-Shamal SC, followed by UAE's Sharjah Women's Sports Club against Al Thawra Basketball Club from Syria.
