Sharjah24: Under the auspices of Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, and Chairman of the Sharjah Executive Council (SEC), the Sharjah International Basketball Championship for Men has commenced. The event is being hosted at the Sharjah Sports Club arena in Sharjah from February 29th to March 5th. Six Arab clubs are participating, namely Sharjah and Al Bataeh from the UAE, Al Wahda and Al Ittihad Aleppo from Syria, along with Antonin and Hops from Lebanon.
The men's team from Sharjah started their tournament with a win against Al Ittihad Aleppo with a score of (84-79) in the initial group, which consists of Sharjah, Al Ittihad Aleppo, and Hops from Lebanon. On Friday, Al Ittihad Aleppo will compete against Hops, while Sharjah concludes the group stage by facing Hops on the following Saturday.
In the second match, the Antonin team from Lebanon secured their first victory over Al Batayeh with a score of (79-63) in the second group. On Friday, Al Wahda from Syria will face Antonin, and Al Batayeh will meet Al Wahda on the following Saturday.
The competition involves six teams divided into two groups, each with three teams in a round-robin format. The top team from each group directly advances to the semi-finals. The second team from Group 1 will face the third team from Group 2 (Match 1), and the second team from Group 2 will compete against the third team from Group 1 (Match 2). The winners then progress to the Golden Square, where the leader of Group 1 faces the winner of Match 2, and the leader of Group 2 encounters the qualifier from Match 1.
The Sharjah men's basketball team previously clinched the championship in the second edition against the Egyptian team Al Jazeera in February 2014. The inaugural edition of the Sharjah International Men's Basketball Championship was won by "Al Chanvil" from Lebanon in 2010. The most recent edition in November 2014 was won by the Saudi team Al Nasr.
The tournament aims to provide opportunities for Sharjah's teams to compete against various schools, aiding in preparations for the final stages of the 2023-2024 sports season. It also serves as an assessment of the technical and physical readiness of all participating teams.
All tournament matches are broadcast live through the Sharjah Sports Club's social media accounts (sharjah ssc) and the club's YouTube channel, offering comprehensive coverage of results, events, and activities.
The opening ceremony saw the presence of dignitaries, including the Chairman of the Sharjah Sports Council, Issa Hilal Al Hazami, Ali Salem Al Midfa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sharjah Sports Club, Abdul Latif Al Fardan, Vice President of the United Arab Emirates Basketball Association, Khaled Issa Al Madfaa, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sharjah Sports Club, and Mohammed Ubaid Al Hosan, Board Member of Sharjah Sports Club and Head of the Collective Games Department.
