The Spirit Awards honour lower-budget films and are among the earliest major pre-Oscars events to announce their shortlists.
Premiering at Sundance earlier this year, “Peter Hujar’s Day” received five nominations, including Best Feature, Best Director and Best Lead Performance.
The film stars American actor Ben Whishaw as the titular photographer living in 1970s New York, shown in conversation with his friend, portrayed by Rebecca Hall.
There were four nominations each for “Train Dreams,” “Blue Sun Palace,” “Sorry, Baby,” “Lurker” and “One of Them Days.”
Netflix’s “Train Dreams,” based on Denis Johnson’s novella, explores the shifting landscape of early 20th century America through the life of a logger and railroad worker. It secured nominations for Best Feature, Best Director and Best Lead Performer for Joel Edgerton.
“Blue Sun Palace,” nominated for Best First Feature and Best First Screenplay for Constance Tsang, follows the bond between two Chinese migrants in New York coping with tragedy.
“Sorry, Baby,” nominated for Best Feature, Best Screenplay and Best Director, is a black comedy that examines the fallout of an assault at a liberal arts college.
Comedy “One of Them Days” earned singer SZA a nomination for Best Breakthrough Performance. She stars as one of two friends — opposite Keke Palmer — scrambling to pay the rent after an irresponsible boyfriend spends it.
Films with budgets exceeding $30 million are not eligible for the Film Independent Spirit Awards, which exist to champion independent cinema.
The awards ceremony will take place at the Hollywood Palladium on 15 February.
Oscars voting concludes on 5 March, with the 98th Academy Awards scheduled for 15 March.
