Sharjah24 - AFP: Timothée Chalamet has gained significant momentum in the Oscars race after winning best actor for Marty Supreme at the Critics Choice Awards, the first major ceremony of the Hollywood awards season.

Best actor recognition

Chalamet triumphed over strong competition, including Leonardo DiCaprio, whose film One Battle After Another dominated the evening by winning best picture, best director and best adapted screenplay for Paul Thomas Anderson. In Marty Supreme, Chalamet portrays a 1950s table tennis champion driven by ambition. The film, loosely inspired by real-life player Marty Reisman and directed by Josh Safdie, has emerged as an unexpected international success.

Awards season momentum

The Critics Choice Awards are seen as influential as Oscars voting approaches. This year, the ceremony replaced the traditional opening slot usually held by the Golden Globes, which are scheduled for the following weekend.

Other film winners

Jessie Buckley won best actress for Hamnet, while Jacob Elordi and Amy Madigan claimed supporting acting honours for Frankenstein and Weapons respectively. Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters won best animated feature and best song, while Sinners collected several technical awards.

Television honours

In television categories, The Pitt won best drama series, The Studio best comedy, and Adolescence best limited series.
