Sharjah24 - WAM: At least 21 people were killed after flash floods caused by torrential rainfall swept through Morocco’s Atlantic coastal province of Safi, located about 330 kilometres south of Rabat, authorities confirmed on Sunday.

Dozens injured as heavy rain triggers widespread damage

The floods left 32 people injured, most of whom have since been discharged from hospital, according to an official statement.

One hour of rain overwhelms infrastructure

Authorities said that just one hour of intense rainfall was enough to inundate homes and shops in Safi’s historic old town, overwhelming drainage systems and causing extensive damage.

Cars swept away and roads cut off

The sudden surge of water swept away vehicles and severed several key roads in Safi and surrounding areas, disrupting transport and access as emergency services responded to the disaster.

Rescue efforts continue across affected areas

Rescue and recovery operations remain ongoing as authorities assess the extent of the damage and work to assist affected residents in the flood-hit region.
