Sharjah 24 – AFP: Borussia Dortmund secured a 2–0 victory over Borussia Mönchengladbach in the opening match of the 15th round of the German Bundesliga, temporarily moving into second place in the table.

Match summary

The Black and Yellows took control early, with Julian Brandt opening the scoring in the 10th minute. It marked his fourth Bundesliga goal of the season and set the tone for the match. Substitute Maximilian Baier sealed the win deep into stoppage time with a goal in the 90+7 minute.

League standings update

With the win, Dortmund recorded their ninth league victory of the season and finished the year on 32 points. They sit three points behind third-placed RB Leipzig, who host Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday, and six points adrift of league leaders Bayern Munich, who face Heidenheim on Sunday.

Consistency against Mönchengladbach

This result marked Dortmund’s second consecutive win over Mönchengladbach and extended their unbeaten run against their rivals to six matches.

Return to winning ways

After recent draws against Bodø/Glimt (2–2) in the Champions League and Freiburg (1–1) in the Bundesliga, Dortmund returned to winning form before the break. They will next face Eintracht Frankfurt on January 9.

Defensive resilience

Dortmund earned praise for holding onto their lead, an area that has been problematic this season. Prior to this match, they had dropped eight league points after taking the lead and lost four points across six Champions League group-stage matches.

Mönchengladbach’s struggles

Borussia Mönchengladbach suffered their seventh defeat of the season and remain on 16 points, temporarily sitting in eleventh place in the Bundesliga standings.
