Sharjah 24 – AFP: Israeli authorities demolished a four-storey residential building in the Silwan neighbourhood of east Jerusalem on Monday, leaving around 100 Palestinian residents, including women, children, and the elderly, homeless.

Bulldozers destroyed the building early in the morning while residents were asleep, allowing them to take only essential belongings. Some displaced families reported having to sleep in their cars.

'Systematic policy' criticized

Local Palestinian officials and activists described the demolition as part of a "systematic policy" to displace Palestinians from east Jerusalem. Two Israeli NGOs, Ir Amin and Bimkom, said it was the largest demolition carried out in 2025, affecting around 100 families. Palestinians face significant hurdles in obtaining building permits, with many structures deemed illegal under restrictive Israeli planning laws.

Municipality and legal justification

The Jerusalem municipality stated the demolition followed a 2014 court order, noting that the land was zoned for leisure and sports, not residential purposes. Authorities claimed residents had been given extensions and offered solutions, which were reportedly declined. Critics argue that such zoning and demolitions serve to advance Israeli settlement expansion in the area.

Rising tensions in east Jerusalem

Silwan, located near the Old City, has long been a focal point of tension between Israeli settlers and Palestinian residents. Activists say Israeli authorities often designate Palestinian areas as parks or open spaces to facilitate settlements. The demolition comes amid broader tensions in east Jerusalem, intensified since the October 2023 attacks and the ongoing Gaza conflict.

International context

The status of Jerusalem remains a central issue in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel considers east Jerusalem part of its capital, while Palestinians see it as the capital of their future state. The UN does not recognize Israel's annexation of east Jerusalem and considers such demolitions and settlement expansions illegal under international law.
