The announcement follows a complex medical case involving a nine-month-old baby diagnosed with multiple kidney stones caused by Cystinuria. This rare inherited genetic disorder also affects his two-year-old brother. The infant initially underwent emergency stent insertion at SEHA Sheikh Khalifa Medical City (SKMC) to relieve a kidney blockage, followed by several sessions of laser ablation to remove stones from the ureters and both kidneys.
Dr Hamid Reza Toussi, Consultant Urological Surgeon at SEHA SKMC, emphasised the importance of the procedure, stating: “LASER Stone Surgery is a critical intervention for paediatric patients with kidney stones. By offering this procedure, we aim to provide comprehensive care and long-term support to children and their families.”
He explained that children with renal or bladder stones are at higher risk of recurrence and long-term complications, including impaired kidney function. As part of SEHA’s integrated care model, affected patients are closely monitored by paediatric nephrologists to ensure continuous renal health evaluation and effective post-operative follow-up.
