The year began with the launch of the world’s first large-scale, round-the-clock gigascale renewable energy project in Abu Dhabi, combining solar power with battery storage to deliver up to 1 gigawatt of baseload electricity daily. The UAE also advanced water security by introducing a Geospatial Data Platform for Agriculture and Water Resources, designed to reduce groundwater use and increase reliance on alternative water sources.
Environmental efforts included the first comprehensive modern seabed survey of Abu Dhabi’s coastal waters, the discovery of three new plant species in Sharjah, and the inclusion of the Khor Kalba Mangrove Centre in the Wetlands Link International network. In the circular economy, BEEAH announced the region’s first commercial-scale waste-to-hydrogen plant, and national tyre-recycling initiatives were rolled out to support industrial manufacturing.
Internationally, the UAE expanded solar and renewable projects across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, while domestically the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant marked its first year of full operations, supplying 25 per cent of the nation’s electricity.
