Sharjah24: Portuguese coach José Morais confirmed that Sharjah’s upcoming match against Al Wahda in the ADNOC Pro League is a strong and important fixture amid a congested period of matches. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, he stressed that the team treats the game as part of the normal course of the season, without exaggeration or extra pressure.

“It’s a new league match in a short, busy period, but at the same time, it’s a beautiful game because it’s a classic between two big teams. I expect an enjoyable match, best watched live in the stadium rather than on television, regardless of the result,” he said.

Preparation and team focus

Morais explained that preparations for this match follow the same approach the team applies to all games. The coaching staff does not differentiate between fixtures in terms of preparation or effort.

“We prepare for every match in the best possible way, given the time available, with the same level of care. There is no match we prepare for more or less—every game requires the same work,” he added.

He noted that preparations began with players being given full rest at first, before gradually returning to technical and physical training.

“We started yesterday, but the goal was purely rest. We paused all work for recovery. Today we return with slightly higher training intensity, focusing more on what we can deliver as a team rather than solely on the opponent,” he said.

Morais emphasised that the team remains in a building and development phase, with the primary goal of raising collective performance to give the best possible chance of winning.

“Our project is still in its early stages, and we must develop it gradually until we reach a level that allows us to approach matches with the best opportunity to secure all three points. This is our working method, and this is our belief,” he added.

Facing a former team

When facing a team he previously coached, Morais said it does not create any psychological burden and is a normal part of a professional coach’s journey.

“I have faced teams I previously coached, such as Al Hilal. These situations are normal in football. I am no longer there; my full focus is on my current team, and that is what matters most,” he said, smiling.

“Of course, I will be happy to meet old friends, as human relationships endure. But once the match starts, everything is on the field. Friendship does not end because of a game.”

Player perspective

Sharjah player Harib Abdullah described the upcoming clash as one of the most anticipated matches because of the high level of competition between the two teams.

“As the coach mentioned, we expect an enjoyable match for both teams. It’s a derby, or a classic, with its own unique character, and we hope it will be a beautiful game befitting the name and values of both clubs,” he said.

He added: “As players, we will give our maximum effort on the pitch. We aim to win, bring points back to the team, make the fans of Al Malek proud, and continue the team’s journey in the league.”
