The match was marked by intense drama and prolonged stoppages. Play was halted for nearly 15 minutes after Senegalese protests over a late penalty awarded to Morocco following a VAR review. Diaz attempted a Panenka-style kick, but Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy saved it comfortably, sending the match into extra time.

Earlier, a Senegal goal had been disallowed following another VAR intervention. Morocco were reduced to 10 men during extra time after using all substitutions.
