Sharjah24 - AFP: Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos announced on Monday that a “significant” natural gas discovery had been made near the country’s only producing offshore gas site, offering a potential boost to the nation’s rapidly declining reserves.

Major find near Malampaya field

Around 98 billion cubic feet (2.8 billion cubic metres) of natural gas have been discovered east of the Malampaya Field near Palawan island — enough to supply electricity to about 5.7 million homes for one year.

Energy Security Concerns

The Philippines faces high energy costs and the risk of a supply shortfall as the Malampaya field, which provides roughly 40 percent of power to Luzon, is expected to be depleted within the next few years.

First discovery in over a decade

The new find, located five kilometres east of Malampaya, is the first in more than ten years and suggests further potential in the surrounding area. Initial tests showed production flows of 60 million cubic feet per day.

Expert views on impact

Kairos Dela Cruz of the Institute for Climate and Sustainable Cities said the discovery, while modest, could lead to additional finds and improve energy security. Another industry source said it could extend Malampaya’s lifespan by two to three years.

Renewables still essential

Experts stressed that the Philippines must continue expanding renewable energy, including solar, hydro and offshore wind, to ensure long-term sustainability.

Geopolitical context

Oil and gas exploration in disputed South China Sea areas remains halted since 2022, while Beijing continues to reject a 2016 international ruling against its territorial claims.
